Type 2 Diabetes: Managing Advanced Complications
 
Presenter: Christopher Newton, MD
Objectives:

  • To outline the epidemiology and burden of diabetes, including morbidity, diabetes-specific complications and co-morbidities, and mortality and costs of care.
  • To discuss appropriate metabolic goals for optimizing health and Type 2 diabetes management for patients with cardiovascular disease and/or renal complications of diabetes.
  • To identify best-practice strategies for the diagnosis and evidence-based treatment for glycemic management through a review of practice guidelines and consensus recommendations, including benefits and contraindications (or precautions).
  • To utilize the needed clinical strategies to address and review standards of care for secondary prevention in patients with established cardiovascular and/or renal disease, including lipid, blood pressure, antiplatelet therapy, and other associated co-morbidities.
